Unstoppable Domains was awarded patent 12,184,604 by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office today for “Domain name registration based on verification of entities of reserved names.”
The process of determining which domains should be kept off the registration register and then confirming that a person or organization has been given permission to register those domains is covered by the patent.
Currently offering blockchain-based names for sale, Unstoppable Domains intends to apply for top-level domain names during the upcoming ICANN expansion cycle. It claims that both actual domains on the DNS and name conventions based on blockchain technology are covered by its patent.
The patent outlines a method for identifying identities—such as well-known names and trademarks—that ought to be kept private.
Unstoppable Domains applied for the patent in April 2022.
