Rajasthan Farmers Petition Chief Minister for Crop Insurance Relief

Rajasthan farmers, hit by up to 90% Kharif crop losses, have petitioned the Chief Minister for urgent relief. Gaps in PMFBY insurance coverage remain a major concern.

Facing massive losses from incessant rains, farmers across Rajasthan have petitioned Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma to provide urgent financial relief. Reports suggest that 75–90% of Kharif crops have been wiped out, raising concerns over gaps in the existing crop insurance framework.

Farmers’ Plea to the CM

Representatives of farmer unions submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister’s office, seeking immediate compensation and waiver of crop loan interest. They have also called for the activation of state disaster relief funds to address urgent household needs.

Local panchayats warn that without assistance, indebted farmers may be forced to migrate or sell land.

Insurance Shortfalls

While Rajasthan is a participant in the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY), farmers allege that claim processing delays and low payouts have left them vulnerable. In many districts, survey reports of crop damage have not yet been finalized, further stalling compensation.

Experts argue that heavy dependence on rainfall and lack of irrigation facilities amplify risks, making timely crop insurance settlement critical.

Government’s Initial Response

CM Bhajan Lal Sharma has assured farmers that damage assessments are underway and compensation will be disbursed as per guidelines. He also indicated that discussions with the central government may open up additional relief measures if crop loss estimates remain severe.

Why It Matters

Rajasthan’s Kharif season is the backbone of rural livelihoods, especially for small and marginal farmers. This crisis underscores the importance of faster PMFBY claims, disaster fund activation, and fair compensation policies. Without urgent intervention, farmer distress could spill over into larger economic and social challenges for the state.
