Disruption in Haryana: Ayushman Bharat Suspension Hits 1.8 Crore Beneficiaries

Private hospitals across Haryana have stopped Ayushman Bharat services over ₹500 crore unpaid dues, leaving lakhs of low-income patients without access to cashless care. The state promises relief, but uncertainty remains.

Haryana’s healthcare network was jolted this week as over 650 private hospitals suspended Ayushman Bharat – PM-JAY services from midnight on 7 August 2025, citing ₹490–500 crore in unpaid dues from the state government. The Indian Medical Association (IMA), Haryana, said this move will impact around 1.8 crore beneficiaries, most of whom depend on the scheme for life-saving treatments.

Hospitals Say ‘Enough Is Enough’

Dr. Sushil Kumar, President of IMA-Haryana, told reporters:

“We have been running Ayushman Bharat on credit for months. Many hospitals are struggling to pay staff salaries. Without dues cleared, we cannot continue cashless treatment.”

Private hospitals say reimbursements have been delayed since March, forcing them to bear operational costs. Facilities in Gurgaon, Hisar, and Rohtak have stopped new Ayushman admissions, though emergencies are still being attended.

Government Releases Partial Funds

On 4 August, the State Health Agency (SHA) disbursed ₹245 crore to hospitals, processing claims up to early May. Officials assured that a supplementary budget will be tabled on 22 August to clear the remaining dues. The Health Minister stated:

“We remain committed to Ayushman Bharat and will ensure hospitals are paid promptly. Budget constraints delayed payments, but funds are on the way.”

Ayushman Bharat – PM-JAY is the world’s largest government-funded health insurance scheme, offering ₹5 lakh annual cover to low-income families. In Haryana, private hospitals handle over 60% of scheme-related procedures. Suspension means patients needing surgeries, dialysis, and cancer treatment will now face out-of-pocket costs running into lakhs.
