Tripura Launches “Complete Animal Wealth Shield” — Livestock Insurance Scheme for Farmers

Tripura has launched the “Complete Animal Wealth Shield” scheme to provide affordable livestock insurance for farmers. The initiative aims to protect cattle and other livestock from natural calamities and disease-related losses, ensuring economic stability in rural areas.

Agartala, August 1, 2025 — In a big step toward supporting rural livelihoods, the Tripura government has launched a new livestock insurance scheme called “Complete Animal Wealth Shield. The initiative aims to protect farmers from economic losses caused by the death or illness of cattle, buffaloes, goats, and other livestock.
What’s unique? The government will subsidize nearly 85% of the premium, making the policy highly affordable for small and marginal farmers.

What Is the “Complete Animal Wealth Shield”?

This is a livestock insurance program designed to offer full compensation to farmers if their insured animals die due to natural or accidental causes. It’s part of Tripura’s push to bring more risk protection to the agricultural sector, especially in rural and tribal areas.

Key Highlights of the Scheme

  • Premium Subsidy:
    • Farmers pay only 15% of the insurance premium
    • The Tripura government covers the remaining 85%
  • Coverage Includes:
    • Death due to disease, accidents, snake bites, lightning, fire, etc.
    • Possible add-ons for calf mortality, theft, or veterinary care
  • Who Can Apply:
    • Small and marginal farmers
    • Self-help groups or livestock cooperatives
    • Farmers with cattle, buffaloes, goats, pigs, and poultry
  • Implementation Partners:
    • The scheme is being rolled out with the help of veterinary officers, local gram panchayats, and selected insurance companies.

Why This Matters for Rural India

Livestock is not just a side-income in villages — it’s often a family’s only financial safety net. A sudden illness or accident killing a cow or goat can mean serious hardship for the farmer.
With this scheme:

  • Farmers get financial stability
  • Veterinary care awareness improves
  • Insurance penetration in rural areas gets a boost

According to state officials, this scheme will also reduce distress selling of animals during emergencies.

What Officials Are Saying

“This is about more than just insurance — it’s about giving our farmers the peace of mind they deserve,” said a Tripura Animal Husbandry Department spokesperson.
“By sharing the cost burden, the government is ensuring that even the smallest farmer can access protection for their animals.”

How to Enroll

Farmers can:

  • Contact their nearest veterinary officer or panchayat office
  • Provide basic documents: Aadhaar card, animal tag details, photos
  • Pay their 15% share and get a digital policy certificate

The scheme is being actively promoted across livestock markets and rural camps in Tripura this month.
With the “Complete Animal Wealth Shield,” Tripura is setting an example for farmer-first, affordable insurance that protects one of rural India’s most important assets — livestock. This is what inclusive development looks like.
We’ll keep tracking similar schemes across India that bring protection closer to the people who need it most.
