Willis Towers Watson Appoints Azad Kumar as India Head for Energy & Marine Insurance

Global brokerage firm Willis Towers Watson has appointed Azad Kumar as the India Head for Energy and Marine Insurance, effective August 2025.

Willis Towers Watson (WTW), a global leader in advisory, broking, and risk solutions, has appointed Azad Kumar as the new Head of Energy & Marine Insurance for its India operations.

With over two decades of experience in underwriting, technical broking, and energy-risk consulting, Kumar’s appointment is seen as a strategic move to expand WTW’s footprint in high-risk sectors like oil, gas, renewables, and shipping.

Key Focus Areas for Azad Kumar:

  • Developing customized risk programs for Indian energy and marine clients
  • Expanding offshore and upstream oil & gas coverage
  • Driving data-led risk analytics for shipping and port insurance
  • Collaborating with reinsurers and Lloyd’s markets for large placements

Leadership Commentary

“Azad brings a rare mix of industry knowledge and data-driven risk advisory. His appointment aligns with our commitment to bring sectoral depth to clients in India’s fast-transforming energy and marine ecosystem,” said Vinod Mahindra, CEO of WTW India.

Azad Kumar previously served in senior roles at Aon, Marsh, and IFFCO Tokio, and holds certifications in energy risk management from Lloyd’s Academy and IRM UK.

Why This Matters

India’s marine cargo insurance market is expected to cross ₹4,000 crore by FY27, while the energy sector, especially green hydrogen and offshore wind, is witnessing a spike in demand for specialty insurance products.

With ports, LNG terminals, and renewable projects expanding rapidly under India’s infrastructure push, demand for technical marine and energy covers is surging.

WTW aims to leverage this growth by offering tailored solutions and advanced analytics for industrial clients.
